Making Tax Digital
From April 2026 all self-employed businesses and landlords with turnover greater than £50,000 will need to make quarterly digital returns to HM Revenue and Customs under the new Making Tax Digital (MTD) regime. From April 2027, the turnover threshold will decrease to £30,000, meaning that most self-employed will fall under the legislation. This will be a massive change for many businesses and individuals, especially those who have been used to manual record keeping. It is vital that your business is prepared for this new system well in advance of April 2026 or 2027 and has compatible accounting software which complies with the new reporting requirements. Sarah Goddard is a certified Xero adviser and has considerable experience using Quickbooks, Sage Line 50 and Free Agent bookkeeping software.
